How flexible-destination flight search works

What is flexible-destination search?

Flexible-destination flight search starts with where you can leave from and what you can spend, while allowing more than one arrival destination. You might consider Anywhere, one region or a shortlist of cities.

It helps answer “Where could I go?” before you commit to a particular route. It is most useful when you can compare both destinations and date combinations that genuinely fit your time away.

Three useful levels of flexibility

• Anywhere: begin broadly when you have few destination preferences.
• A region: explore an area you are interested in without selecting one city.
• A shortlist: compare a few places you would realistically choose.

An Anywhere search may not cover every airline or airport. Check what the service includes before relying on its results.

Keep the conditions connected

Suppose you can travel during November and want 5–9 nights away. A seven-night trip returning in December would fail your availability limit. A four-night trip entirely in November would fail your trip-length limit. A return fare over your budget would fail even if the outbound leg looked cheap.

The destination can change; the trip still needs to work for you.

Decide what you are comparing

For New Zealand departures, check the origin airport first. A fare from another NZ airport is only relevant if reaching that airport is realistic for you. Keep the comparison in NZ dollars and use the complete return journey.

Consider the practical differences between destinations too. A cheap flight alone does not establish that the whole holiday is affordable. Set a separate allowance for the rest of your trip without treating an airfare search as a total holiday budget.

Where a Waywide Watch would fit

A Watch would save the destinations you would consider, when you can travel, how long you want to stay and your budget, then keep checking for flights that meet them all.

Waywide is pre-launch. We are testing flight information and ongoing price checks. Search, Watches and alerts are not live yet.
